BOSSANOVA

A Contemporary Painting Exhibition @ tactileBOSCH

June 14th - 12th July 2008

The legitimate yearning for expression rears its contemporary head once again. tactileBOSCH's third [internationally flavoured] painting exhibition...

...BOSSA NOVA

Like a sliver of samba - the ritual of painting offers a certain rhythm. This rhythm retains a soundtrack that is infectious, repetitive & residual. It's a vibrancy that will be presented live for all to see as several artists-in-res, invited to create new work on site in the weeks leading up to the show will use tactileBOSCH as a studio without walls...

A tactileBOSCH ‘studio without walls' project aims to push the envelope in a residency style program that shows a number of practitioners publically preparing for an exhibition of contemporary painting. A number of areas will be designated as work in progress areas from the 1st June until the opening of the exhibition on Sat 14 th June. Remaining in situ till Sat July 12 th .

Hence the 200 yr old Victorian Buildings that houses tactileBOSCH becomes a ‘working animation' showing the public [arts aficionados and student groups alike] a ‘studio without walls' in an attempt to give insight into artists' processes that usually go unseen behind studio walls. I.e. count how many cigarettes one painter can smoke while contemplating their next masterpiece [watch them worry]

*In keeping with the expressive Painting theme a number of-performances will inhabit the outer reaches of tactileBOSCH from 6.30-9pm
They Include: Hannah Jones, James Harper, Ashleigh Heeson, Hannah Pollard. Andy Hill &Matt Duncan

Pulsating with international vigour… French painter Gilles Ben Istri will travel back to Cardiff to work in the upstairs gallery. *Gilles talked enthusiastically about potential futures helping to activate exchanges between artists based in Cardiff and Marseille. BOSSANOVA will provide the perfect opportunity to discuss and develop these potentials. Parlez vous francais?

Fledgling exchanges between Dresden & Cardiff have been instigated through Iduna Bohning the pro-active Director of Kunsthaus Raskalnikow www.galerie-raskolnikow.de a beautiful gallery located in the old part of Dresden. Iduna Bohning is a key figure in the resurgence of contemporary art in Dresden with links and future potentials in both Prague and Budapest and introduces two local Dresden artists Katharina Lewonig + Tobias Stengal to the UK for the first time.

Continuing the ‘studio without walls' concept younger artists Zaeger Jones & Clare Skidmore will work in situ. Both eschewing traditional painting to work on large-scale wallscapes on two different floors @ the studio.

Colour flavourist - Alan Rhys Baynes , New Yorker - Matt Duncan , the explosive Andrew Hill & the enigmatic Iwan Bala break boundaries both conceptually and physically – whether its setting fire to their paintings or installing carpetry each divine a singular rhythm from static 2D into the 3 rd Dimension although with the energetic pulse of Bossanova they will be fighting for space with younger artists Aishan Yu [chong Qing] and Ben Lloyd [Carmarthen]. Both Yu and Lloyd are completing Masters Degree this year one @ Slade College London – the other @ UWIC - we will therefore see state of the art installation work that is academic and thought provoking. While the expressive Andrew Hill will beat his paint infused

Combining more traditional sensibilities Samuel James Hunt, Ben Rees-Thomas, Dominic Crastner, Graham Phillips, Chen Jiao, Rob PepperelL & Will Roberts sublimate everything that is normal in 2D imagery. Pushing boundaries in technical skill, style and content from the metaphysically abstract Rob Pepperell to the perfectly rendered Portraiture of Sam Hunt along with the delicate precision of Nathan Ford & Jiao Chen . All have responded in their own way to the movement and dance of BOSSANOVA

'Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?'
